I will try Fedora first (http://fedora.org). It is the "replacement" for
Red Hat Linux. We will see how that goes and then I'll make further
choices.

I am sad to see the "consumer" Red Hat go away. I also worry if this will
hurt them in the long run. Familiarity breeds sales, I think. If we home
users can't get "real" Red Hat inexpensively, will we want to use it on
the job? I hope it works for them.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is not free of charge, as such. Being Free
Software, you can download the source but you would have to then "roll
your own" distro from the source. There was a thread about doing just
that a little bit ago in this list. Maybe someone that discussed it can
respond better.
