I've been using Ubuntu since before they released their final version of
Warty Warthog, and have found that upgrading the system is just as easy
as it was on Debian -- all that is required is a simple "apt-get update;
apt-get dist-upgrade" and for the newbies they've provided synaptic,
which makes package management just as easy as the command line. During
the pre-Warty days of Ubuntu, things were changing drastically quite
often, and yet I had no problems tracking them throughout the whole
process.
I imagine (at this point in time, anyway) that to upgrade from Warty to
Hoary you'll have to change the repository settings (ie:
"cat /etc/apt/sources.list |sed s/warty/hoary/g"), but again synaptic
makes that a snap.
One thing to note is that Ubuntu uses it's own frozen snapshot of the
Debian archives. This means that some things that are in the Debian
archive now aren't available in Ubuntu. It is possible, however, to use
most Debian packages without issues.
IOW, don't worry too much about Ubuntu -- upgrading is easy. =o)
