Subject: Upgrade-ability of Mepis and Ubuntu (for InstallFest)
There have been concerns about using Mepis, Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS for
the InstallFest, because of not being sure how to upgrade them
without breaking.

I know PCLOS uses URPMI and is safe to update, upgrade and get new
packages without breaking. It's a faster, lighter, bug-fixed
Mandrake, if you will. I think it's far superior to Mandrake and
probably the most newbie-friendly of the three live-cd, installable
derivatives.

All three have preconfigured sources for packages, if that helps.

I posted the following question about SimplyMepis and Ubuntu at
linuxquestions.org, and got the following answer:
--------------------------------------------------------
Q. How do I update/upgrade Ubuntu and SimplyMepis?

My LUG is considering using Ubuntu and SimplyMepis for our
InstallFests because they're so easy to install and use, and are
based on Debian.

Question 1: Do they update/upgrade well, or do they break if you try
to update them (a la Knoppix)?

Question 2: What repositories do they use for future updating and
upgrading? Do they use the standard Debian repositories, or do they
need special repositories? I've looked through their user forums and
can't find the answer to this.

A. update is simply updating apt-get packages.
upgrade in mepis will upgrade to debain system.
ubuntu has its own packages but can use debain packages.
these debain based systems are have been pre configured to make
debain easy to install for noobs.
I would sugest that wait till the distro releases a upgrade both of
these do at least twice a year.
upgrading individual packages is no problem.
hope this helps.
