I recently bought a 9200, which is similar enough to a 9000 for this
purpose. (Same way with the 8500 and 9100.) I wrote up some notes and
sent them to the list a little while ago. You don't need the ATI binary
drivers; it's supported by 4.3.0. 2D works without a hitch; it's the 3D
that's a little bit tricky.

I don't have a link to the message, since there's some weirdness going
on with the plug-discuss archives. I sent a copy to the main mailing
list for my old LUG (also PLUG, but Philadelphia), and a friend of mine
added it to the HOWTO archive that he maintains for that group. That
link is
<http://www.clockbot.net/HowTo/BillJonas/Radeon9200/Radeon9200.Notes.txt>.
(I can forward you a copy via private email, if you'd like.) I'd offer
a little more insight on it (the tricky part for a newbie, if you've
already got X 4.3, would be compiling the kernel modules, if Knoppix
hasn't included those), but I'm tired and about to go to bed. If you're
interested in going this route, I would be willing to help. Note that
performance with the open source drivers isn't that good yet, since this
is the first version with support
