I sympathize on what a friend calls "the purple squirrel syndrome".
Min wage laws make everything worse. Look at CA. Everyone's expenses go up,
so everyone lays off or tightens budgets. Including your clients, who
either see payroll increases directly or indirectly through higher vendor
costs. (I can't believe there is even controversy on such a blatant fact.)
So when they tighten the budget, contractors will be in less demand and
will make less. (I'm glad I'm not a contractor anymore. I originally
contracted so I could get OUT of the rat race.)
THAT is exploitation - of a naive citizenry by self-congratulatory pols.
But hey, the pols are happy, so it's worth the lifestyle hit we take, right?
