I second this advice. Find out if the computer even knows you are
connected.

Before my wife went digital with her photos and had to have a nicer
printer, we got alot of use out of an Epson C40ux. USB. $5-6 ink
cartridges online, $12-ish local. Just works with Linux. My kids have
it now. I don't know if they are discontinued or not. It was $50 bucks
brand new when we got it.

But, don't buy a new one till we get the one you have talking.
