For those items that are 'heat' sensitive, a propane
torch works wonders on the media. Zip/cdrom/flash
should definately be toast (so to speak)!!! I believe
if you 'get smoke' off the platter, then it should be
'smoked' for sure. At least any 'recovery' method
would be unlikely to be done by anyone other than my
old boss...NSA! And they can get it BEFORE you can
toast the media if they want it bad enough!!!
Anything that cannot stand 'cooking' would be toast.
Just kinda messy as cdroms melt/burn and the fumes are
a bit toxic if breathed. But would be impossible to
retrieve data from for sure!!
