I was tempted to support this measure. On the surface it sounds reasonable.
Radio talk show guy Charles Goyette (1100 KFNX) had some good comments in the
negative side (
www.charlesgoyette.com):
"Look, under current law the results of taxpayer-driven research at our
universities can be sold or licensed to private businesses. Would it instead
have been wiser to have traded rights to state sponsored research to dot com
companies for their now worthless shares? This measure would allow the
schools to be equity holders owners of businesses. One critic reasonably
suggests it wouldnt be long before questions of profiteering, cronyism, and
conflict of interest arise."
He has a point. I've decided to vote no.
