As I recall, Red Hat removed mp3 support at RH8 in order to appeal to the
corporate workstation market, which didn't want employees listening to
music or doing other "non-productive" activities. Fedora Core 1 should
have it support it right out of the box, however, if you feel the need to
stick with Red Hat.
