Speaking of pinging /. -- here is a funny story.

My Network admin is testing out this new firewall monitoring tool
thingie which shows what sites people are currently browsing (kinda like
watching the tail of a forced squid proxy, I suppose). He wanted me to
test it out so I go to /. -- but the thing is scrolling so fast that he
can't pick out my /. out of the rest of the network's activity. So I say
ok --

while (true) ; do wget http://slashdot.org/ ; done

and go back over to his desk. We still don't see it. Mess around with
the various filter settings and can't figure it out. No big deal, it was
just for fun anyway. I go back to my desk, and attempt to click on a /.
article that was on my screen. I get:

"Either your network or ip address has been banned from Slashdot"

in nice big letters on a lovely pink/purple background along with
instructions on how to request an un-blocking. I then remembered to kill
my bash script.

That was a week and a half ago. I've sent them a few requests, and the
last one even mentions that we only have one office-wide external IP
that they've blocked and that my coworkers are starting to leave me
threatening notes....

But still we're blocked. There may be a lesson to be learned here :)
