framebuffer is something the kernel sets up on boot. You may need to
recompile (using make-kpkg, kernel-source-`uname -r`, and
build-essential packages)

256mb is pretty thin for a shared-mem video card desktop system.
I'd like to suggest #debian on irc.freenode.net- lots of knowledgeable
folk hang out there all the time, and the resident faq-bot is very wise.
