knowledge is acquired through effort, time, understanding and patience.
Not all computer users wish to spend the time, effort or have the
patience to understand what may be required to be known.
Generally a distribution would have its own repositories and its own
means to install updates and new programs and would therefore have
knowledge about how to configure user interface, launchers, menus, etc.
Some people want the latest, greatest version of a program and download
a binary from some place other than the repositories and mechanisms
offered by the distribution that they use and don't recognize that this
binary isn't configured to handle the user interface elements portion of
the install - leaving it to the user. That would appear to be your
problem. Thus if you wish to install binary applications from sources
other than your Linux distribution and you lack the knowledge of how to
create the launchers, menus, user interface elements, you will suffer
from the frustration of discovering what it is that you don't know.
It is how we deal with that lack of knowledge that differentiates us.
I would suggest reading the book 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance' as it covers this subject rather thoroughly.
Basically, you have to make a decision on what type of user you wish to
be...
- empowered, self-sufficient, inquisitive, educated...this message base
serves these people quite well as we all are at varying levels of
knowledge of the Linux structures and are perfectly willing to help
those who wish to work these things through.
- user of technology with no desire to work through installation issues.
These users really need to pick a strong Linux package and use the
built-in package management system to install new packages, upgrades
etc. and should not venture into project binaries.
