You should be able to locate the executable file for Firefox in

'/home/yourusername/firefox-installer/firefox'

or something like that. The executable file "firefox" will be wherever
you untarred the original download.

Then just create a link on the desktop. I think Mepis uses KDE as a
default, just right click on the desktop, and select

    create new --> file --> link to application


Then click on the cog icon to select an icon that suits your purposes
and rename the link to "Firefox" or something like that.

The click the application tab and input the link to the executable file
in the "command" field.

I don't use gnome, so I am not 100% sure how to make an icon there.
