When I first started to play with Linux (RedHat) I didn't "get"
chkconfig either. Any service you don't want to run on a RedHat (and I
assume any RedHat based/derived system) can be easily changed by
changing the "S" to "s". At least on a RH system only links starting
with a capital "S" will actually be started. Doing this allows you to
see what you have disabled in any particular runlevel by going into that
rc*.d startup directory.
chkconfig is a pretty good tool :)
