Personally, I'm not looking for offensive comments, but I know when I'm being
slapped in the face. As a Sikh who is sworn to respect and defend religious
freedom for all people, I must say that I resent "towel-head" comments
against people who wear turbans.
"Towel-head" is definitely a derogatory term for "turban-wearer." If you had
ever had someone scream it at you from a passing car while they throw their
drinks at you, you would know that. It's something you never forget...
The hijackers on 9/11 did NOT wear turbans. They had cut hair and shaved just
like most American men. My husband proudly wears a turban. A gentle,
peace-loving, turban-wearing Sikh was murdered here in the valley after 9/11
just because of ignorant hatred against turban-wearing people. I never
expected to encounter that bigotry here in my PLUG email.
With every decision we make every day, our words and deeds can be healing or
hurtful. Please choose wisely.
