I am neither sophisticated nor knowledgeable about copyrights, patents
nor any form of 'intellectual property.' I know nothing about the
origins of the term 'intellectual property' except that it would have
been a natural progression since the items to which it refers are not
tangible.

The fact remains that this is a capitalistic society and even 'free'
television and radio has commercials to bear the cost and profit motives
of the ventures that put out 'free' broadcasts and likewise, even the
GPL is all about protecting intellectual property.

So in the end, it seems as though the arguments are driven by the people
who feel their ox is getting gored. Now if the general public recognizes
that it's their ox and then rises up, that could get interesting.
