Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't help. That's assuming
I've get lilo.conf configured correctly. For example, the relevant line for
Red Hat 9 is:

    append="root=LABEL=/ acpi=off apm=off"


I was using this system for several hours, and then left it alone for about
an hour, and when I returned, it was in screensaver mode and hung again. And
in answer to Jeff's suggestion - I've switched off every BIOS setting I can
find that looks remotely related to APM. There's nothing that says I can
explicitly turn power management off, though.

I'm not sure I'm on the right track with this, but the end of
/var/log/messages from RH9 does seem to make power management look guilty:
