Because 1, yaboot will boot without needing a key to be held down 2,
it's configurable, and 3, you still need a bootloader to boot the Linux
kernel and I don't believe (fairly confidently) that OF will go that
far, but only recognize the bootstrap partitions. The Linux icon will
boot the (main) bootstrap partition and the OSX icon will boot OSX's
bootstrap partition directly. Otherwise, the machine will boot the first
bootstrap partition it encounters (which is why the Gentoo docs have you
reorder the partitions, making the linux bootstrap hda2 instead of say
hda12).
I don't know how clueful the employees are when it comes to Linux on the
hardware, but they can, and will sell you the machine. As for my idea of
booting a LiveCD in-store, I've never tried it myself. That was just an
idea I thought of while writing the e-mail. It won't effect the
computer's solid-state components in any way, and will leave no residue.
