I am on the west side (Glendale to be precise.) We like it here, and
generally housing is a bit cheaper in the west, but be warned: most tech
jobs are on the east side! I feel the same way as you about associations,
but it's hard to avoid them in new housing. We bought an 18-year old house
(now 24) for that reason. But the older homes are better-built anyway, and
you actually get a yard, not a 5-foot strip of land around the building. :-)
