OK, I got my CD's back and tried to remove and reinstall. RPM got snippy
with me when I wanted to remove the XFree86 RPM, complaining of dependencies.
I got lazy and just did a "rpm -Uvh"; which did update a few files (I took
snapshots of the /usr file tree before and after.) But it didn't fix the
problem. I finally thought of running the XFree86 binary manually, and
seeing what output it produced. I'm not sure if it didn't like my radeon
driver, or if there's some problem with detection due to some corrupt kernel
module. As I noted before, three other installations (all newer, I admit)
detect the Radeo card correctly: Ret Hat 9, Mandrake 9.1, and Lindows 4.0.
So here's the output, and maybe someone can see what might be amiss:

I-------------

My guess is that the newer version of XFree86 is failing and it's falling
back on version 3.3.6, which as I said before doesn't recognize the radeon
card and configures it as a crappy generic VGA.

I thought it was interesting that in the output file it was looking for the
other ATI drivers (which I didn't specify in XF86Config-4) as well as the
radeon driver. But at the end it says that tno devides were detected -
unless it was just looking for the wrong card in that statement.

Thanks!
Vaughn
