Well that explains why the XF86Config-4 was skipped.

You mentioned earlier about copying files from another box.
I suggest that remove all the X11R6 XFree86 files. And reinstall
XFree86.
I don't think you have two complete XFree86 installs, but a mix and match
which is broken.
