I'm not entirely sure I'm into the survey issue at all...it sort of
smacks of the Macintosh chip on the shoulder of competing with Windows
thing. Linux/BSD etc. isn't about that really and I think that it
demeans what is actually occurring in the FOSS world.
There really isn't a well known voice for the FOSS story - perhaps
GNUtella could have told it but people were too busy stealing software
to notice. With Dell/IBM/HP etc., you get companies offering to sell you
a box with Linux on it but the story is about these companies making
profits on their hardware sales & software support - not the FOSS story
itself.
Once you get the picture of free software - free as in liberty and not
just free as in beer, the notions expressed in the polls are less
meaningful. Thus, most of the choices in the poll itself are simply
indications that people recognize the free beer but not the liberty
aspects.
