Ok. Just to clarify things, ALSA is not part of of pre2.5 kernels so it
wouldn't be in the config. Also, aumix is another mixing program that
uses /dev/mixer (OSS). It's in no way related to amixer. Finally, ALSA
was really easy to install. I didn't even exit X. I just emerged the
drivers, utils, and libs, setup my module configs, rmmod'd my OSS
modules and inserted the ALSA modules. Tada!
