Thanks but even local applications, such as gvim, kpaint and even a=20
simple xterm take several seconds to get started. Once a program is "up a=
nd=20
running", however, it's performance seems normal. Maybe there's some garb=
age=20
left over in /tmp that I'm picking up -- I think I've seen old login=20
"residue" there that caused problems later on. Hmmmm....
