This is simple:

1. skip the AV software

2. if you do not have a seperate firewall, then fire up some minimal
rules on ipchains/iptables

3. always use tcpwrappers (beacuse it is so easy)

4. turn off all unneccesary services

5. keep you system as updated/patched as possible
