While I do not know about the document, I believe the easiest way to
see where things are "on-the-fly" is to run `dmesg` (since what you
want is going to be at the end, `dmesg | tail` is a little cleaner).
As for Palm Pilot synchronization, Palm took the shortcut on this
route. The original palms sync over a serial (RS-232) connection.
When Handspring (and later Palm) implemented USB support, they did so
by emulating RS-232 over USB. That is why the Palm devices sync using
/dev/usb/ttyUSB0, where I believe TTY is a historical acronym
(TeleTYpewriter) commonly associated with serial ports.
