I can offer a slightly different opinion on the situation. One of the
key things I have always sought in a registrar is a EULA that offers
some protections and a reasonable level of compromise. The only one
still around that our legal department was able to find is Gandi.net
from france, though there are probably others. A key note is that it
sets forth that you actually "own" your domain which can end up being
very important should you ever get in a dispute. They are not trigger
happy, in our experience, in unjustly handing over domains to the
largest corporation that asks ala NSI or Verisign. Additionally because
they are french it makes frivolous litigation difficult for US
companies.
Fortunately they are cheap 8-12 US depending on the EURO. They also have
been very good about transfers, complex ownership situations and so
forth in regard to our ISP and its customers.
Downside is that they only offer email support though it has been
responsive and of high quality.
Finally let me note that our records indicate they have had an
outstanding level of service comparable with any of the other top tier
registrars we have data on.
Just my two cents and let me disclaim that this is not legal advice,
lest legal send me a cease and desist :)
