Re: kde panel messed up ...

Ouch, better make a backup of all the various dot files for your account and then wipe the config for your DM. Restarting the DM will then result in a default desktop that you can then modify for your needs.

I know this seems like an extreme way to go, but I have found that it can be a necessary step to remove a persistent problem.
