I'll be trying some of this soon as I can get little caught up with some
work, but I thought it worth mentioning the SATA thing. I haven't checked
mine, but ive heard that Apple commonly puts SATA2 drives in even when they
have the SATA3 controller. I don't know if that's a cost or supply chain
thing, just that it happens.

I recall something about ubuntu vbox guests on osx mountain lion having
trouble with 3d acceleration. I'l try more RAM then look into that. My Win7
vbox runs fine so I think a linux one should be able to as well.
