I'll be trying some of this soon as I can get  little caught up with some work, but I thought it worth mentioning the SATA thing. I haven't checked mine, but ive heard that Apple commonly puts SATA2 drives in even when they have the SATA3 controller. I don't know if that's a cost or supply chain thing, just that it happens.

I recall something about ubuntu vbox guests on osx mountain lion having trouble with 3d acceleration. I'l try more RAM then look into that. My Win7 vbox runs fine so I think a linux one should be able to as well.

I'd second that - get something like gkrellm under mac that can show you composite graph stats of cpu, memory, disk and see what is pegging when you run.  Something will generally hit a limit if it's lagging.  Lack of memory will cause it to dip to swap, and then just spills into your disk io performance to kill vm's, and your host performance.

I would presume apple doesn't use cheap/slow ssd's, but but might be worth looking up the model to see what kind of performance it's rated for.  I noticed a big diff going from sata2 to sata3 with upwards of 500MB/s both read/write.

Starting a job this week using a stupid windoze box again by corporate mandate even with ssd has reminded me what lag is like - could just be mac, or their driver layer @ the (bad) os as Lisa said.

Add memory - also, get some read/write statistics on the SD card.  I
have noticed great lags in SD - not sure if this is due to driver(s)
youth or ?

    Hi,

I want to move all my non-windows dev to an ubuntu (or
suggestion) virtual box vm. I'm noticing a sluggish UI both on
ubuntu and Mint with cinnamon when running on my macbook. It's a
retina with ssd and plenty of ram. I thought it might be unity until
I tried Mint. Anyone know trick to speed up a vbox on mac?

    Thanks,
    Josh
