Bryan,

First off take a look at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_wiki_software

The packages I considered in an assessment for extranet use were 1) TWiki
2) TikiWiki 3) MediaWiki.

TWiki has some nice features, is perl based and has some big corporate
users. If you are looking for low level control and don't expect high
server load, use TWiki. Programming for TWiki requires Perl.

TikiWiki has a lot of features, but is in my estimation poorly organized
and not very easy to use.

MediaWiki, although it is built for large load capacity has become the
standard, and has UI features that are familiar to a wide group of people(
this is the Wikipedia wiki software ). It is highly stable. If you are
looking for basic Wiki functionality, go with MediaWiki.

there are of course many other options, but these 3 packages are the
dominant OSS wiki platforms.
