Tapes *may* be needed, due to other constraints, but they still suck. I
avoid tapes whenever I can. Where I work I have partitioned the
historical data into manageable chunks which I store online, on other
computers, and burn to CD/DVD. I burn two sets of CDs, with one kept on
site and another kept off site.

For our situation this is a more robust solution than tapes. Any machine
with a CD/DVD drive will get us our data back.
