IMHO: tapes suck and are not only unreliable but you can't keep track of
how bad bc they sit around not being connected to anything. When they
go bad--you don't know it until you try to read from it and it's too
late. At least with a hard drive you can run diagnostics on it like the
smart tools and you generally know when one starts flaking out.

You might look at using Blue-Ray or HD DVD discs since they are bigger
than DVD.

external USB hard drives might work well. Rotate through 3 or four
periodically changing them out or something.
