I don't think that's a very good guide, at least it didn't seem so to me. I
would see if there's a FAQ for your particular distro, as it might have more
specific information.

If your biggest hurdle is the bootloader, then most of the steps will be the
same, but you will be editing a file such as /boot/grub/menu.lst instead of
lilo.conf. Some distros have a link /etc/grub.conf or something similar.
The format of the file is different than lilo, but it should make sense when
you look at it. Just copy the stanza that's there, and in the new stanza
just change the names of the files for the kernel and initrd to the newly
created ones. Keeping the old stanza there will allow you to boot off your
working kernel if there's something wrong with the new one.

Also note, running "make install" from the directory with the kernel tree
might modify the boot file for you, but I would say it's safer and you'll
learn more if you do it yourself.
