it's the "assembly language" of the functional programming
arena.

If you really want to "look into the face of God" check out
a modern functional programming language: Haskell. See
http://www.haskell.org
There are some excellent tutorials available at this site.
Free (as in beer) Haskell compilers for Linux are available
as well.
