Perhaps I'm no wiser than the next person so take my opinion as you
adjudge.
In the past couple of years I've had credit cards, or just the numbers,
stolen and used for fraudulent purchases on two occasions. But in neither
case did it ever cost me anything out of pocket, only time. My direct
financial risk from the Tucson theft is nil.
IMHO, the credit card companies need to strengthen their security and
practices. It is all too easy for this to happen, and with the Internet, it
is my opinion that current practices are inadequate. The financial sting of
some losses might be a good, and just, incentive to change for the industry.
I'm keeping my current cards until a statement or a phone call indicates
there's a problem. My financial risk is nil and I'm only gambling a
relatively small amount of time.
Choosing to "lose" or otherwise have your credit card numbers changed is
a more pro-active approach and will probably avoid the fraudulent charges
from ever occurring if your numbers were among those stolen.
One question is how do I protect myself from losses at the moment? The
other is how can I help to protect myself against future losses? The answers
may not be the same.
