I believe it is missing a lot of hardware support.

Not much of a problem. Most software is written to be portable and
software for Linux in most cases should compile on a hurd system. (Hurd
uses GNU glibc for example.)
There are also developers working on using gentoo's portage packaging, and
Debian on the Hurd. Also there are reports that Pkgsrc works on the Hurd.
(I develop pkgsrc packges.) And I assume openpkg could easily be setup on
a Hurd system.
