thanks to all for great answers. It turned out that I was getting
everything from var_export and my problem was with the 'control
structure' testing that I was doing - I hope some of the lessons that I
am learning will stick with me because they have come at some incredible
amounts of time suck.
One thing I have learned about php though - is that many of my control
structures evaluate to true when they shouldn't and I have to be extra
careful with them.
