I recommend SuSE... I have 9.1 running on my Thinkpad with everything working
as expected. Note: I did upgrade the kernel to 2.6.10-ck in order to get the
suspend to memory to work, but suspend to hard drive worked out of the box.

I think you will be hard pressed to find a distro that will make everything
"just work" after install... You will need to do a little tweak here and
there for sure (e.g. wireless). But SuSE minimizes what tweaks you need to
do and I think is good for a beginner.

If you are a newbie stay away from Slackware. Slackware is fine for the
experienced user but not a newbie.
