I suppose that depends somewhat on which laptop you have. ;)

A web site you should visit is http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/
There is a lot of good information there.

A good next step would be to try a live-cd such as ubunto or knoppix to
see how well your hardware is (or isn't) recognized, and go from there.
