borrowed a cable and I can talk to the 678!
Don't know the password, but 'es 6' worked.
OK, so now I have a 'cbos>' prompt.

That makes it look like I just need xmodem capabilities to upload the new
firmware.
The win32 software seems to be for configuring the 678. Isn't there a
command line interface on the 678 console?
According to
http://www.deru.com/ciscosetup.html and the email that they
did in fact send me there is :).
So, here's hoping the firmware upgrade works.
