How do you charge to rebuild a system from scratch? Flat or hourly?
The reason I ask is because anyone who has done a rebuild knows there's lots
of standing around: put the disk in, start the installation process, make a
phone call, kick the cat, repeat--for the good part of two days.
Building a system from scratch can take 12 hours of non-continuous time by
the time you install and configure and patch the OS, plus maybe 10-15
applications and suites to go along with it. Add an mail server, RADIUS,
and web server and you've got yourself a machine that needs an entire
weekend of short bursts of time devoted to the rebuild. Your time sheet
would look like " .3, .1, .2, .3, .2, .1, .6, .2, .3, .1, .2, .3, .2, .1,
.1, .6, .2, ...n".
So I don't see how you can very well charge hourly when rebuilding a
machine. Wouldn't a flat fee would seem to be more reasonable? And if a
flat fee IS appropriate, what amount, given that rebuilding a system demands
so many short periods of time over several days.
I am in a pickle here folks; can you help me out?????
Eric
