OK, so it doesn't dial.
Gettin' it to dial is of primary importance when faxing. Having an
ethernet or DSL setup will have no impact on whether your phone modem is
working or not.
Is your phone modem plugged into a phone line? If so, does the phone
line return a dial tone? If the answer to these two questions is "yes,"
a good next step may be to go into KPPP Internet Dialer under the
Network or Internet section of your KDE menu. Select configure, then
modem, then query modem. The results of this should show whether your
modem is configured and talking to phone lines, or if work is needed
there first. If it is working, you may wish to click on the "device" tab
in KPPP and note what device the modem is under.
I am running Simply Mepis, and my laptop modem "just worked" after
installation, despite the fact that it is a winmodem. Hopefully you will
have the same good fortune.
If your modem is working under KPPP, the next step, I think, is to check
and make sure you have the same modem settings loaded under KPrintFax.
If not, it may be a matter of getting a symlink set up for your modem,
or we may have do do the windmodem driver dance.

Lee
