Kurt,
I've never shied away from tearing apart stuff and fixing things. I
was having a weird problem with the paper pickup roller on my HP
Laserjet 6L. It usually grabbed a single sheet, occasionally no sheet
and occasionally a big wad of sheets, which would promptly jam the
printer. I searched and searched and finally found a site that sells a
kit to fix that exact problem. The kit came with a replacement part,
The rubber formula on original roller was a poor formulation, newer
versions of the same printer had the newer rubber formula, but earlier
ones had to be sent in for $repair$. This place sent you a newer
roller and a CD with a video on it showing step-by-step instructions
(from the moment you first touch the printer till the moment you power
it up again).
I was very impressed with the video and had no trouble getting
everything working on my Laserjet. There's even a spot where the new
paper pickup roller could easily be attached the wrong way and the
video showed what to watch out for to make sure it was correct before
you start putting the printer back together.
