According to this, you'll need to use gphoto2. That agrees with my
experience with my own Canon camera (I have a PowerShot A40), as it
worked like a charm for me.
Easier than using gphoto2, at least for me, is to use a card reader. (I
believe on one of those links above that it says it uses compact flash,
as does mine.) This would allow you to mount the card's filesystem in
the way that you were probably expecting you had to (judging from your
original message). I think you can get a single-purpose card reader for
about $20 in a local store, or for about $40 you could get one that
reads six, seven, or eight different formats. Online retailers would,
of course, probably be less expensive.
Note that when using gphoto2, you need to have permissions set up
correctly (the documentation should cover that), or you will need to run
it as root (not recommended, of course).
