----
the reason that I haven't answered - and probably some others is that we
might not be entirely familiar with which and where the bodies are
buried on Mandrake.

Newer systems would likely be using xorg and older systems would be
using XFree86. On RedHat using XFree86, the config file would be located
at /etc/X11/XF86Config and Fedora would use /etc/X11/xorg.conf - myself,
I would probably use 'system-config-display --reconfig' (or redhat-
config-display --reconfig) to change the configuration or simply edit
the file directly.

Not knowing what monitor you are using, it would surely be a multi-sync,
non-interlaced and capable of at least 1024x768 at 60 Hz (both vertical
and horizontal) and likely to do the same at 70 Hz but it appears 70 Hz
didn't work at 1024x768 (or were you trying to use it at 87 Hz -
probably too high of a setting)?

You might get a clue from one of the other Linux distro's that is
working by examining the contents of the aforementioned XF86Config (or
XF86Config-4) file.
