You guess right.
The boot loader (lilo or grub) may be installed in the mbr or another
partition. If you install it somewhere other than the mbr, things get a
bit complicated (more so with lilo). Unless you have reason to do
otherwise (dual booting with Windoze, for example), I'd install it in
the mbr only.
Anyone out there want to elaborate (or correct me if I'm wrong)?
