The package is called "less".
"apt-cache search less" turns up too much. Can anyone share the correct
way to search for packages named "less"?

Make sure that all teh volumes are up and none are muted.
Make sure that a physical cable is from CD player to the sound card.

Try xset. Maybe like:
xset m 7 10
xset m 3 10
xset m default
xset m 0 10
(I use "xset m 2/1 4" on my system.)
Or maybe set
Option "Resolution" "N"
(Where N is the number of counts per inch.)
in your XF86Config.
