YOu know guys,
I just got off of the phone with a fellow PLUGer and he was under the
misconception that I believe many of you may be under; that is that I don't
have an encoder in place (which is not the case). My issue is that while
the .wav files will play just fine I can't get the files that have been
encoded as .mp3s to play.
We even loaded xmms up and he showed me how to configure it. Unfortunately I
had already read in it's man page (and it proved to be true) that it is
configured by default to play .mp3s.
So my 5 gig partition I had set aside for music is now filled to the brim
with .wav files. They sound very nice but are VERY BIG. The same song is
41.9MB as a WAV but 128 B as an MP3
Now I have a new issue: I shut down the system and upon restarting, after
entering the login and password, an alert appeared informing me that
'nspluginscan' crashed (signal 11).Then the desktop started to appear and the
following error appeared six seperate times:
Could not find mime type application/octet-stream
I'm sure this is the last thing you want to hear.... wait... let's google it!
So I entered the error in the search box presssed enter... and voila; a bunch
of hits came up.
I followed this solution (1) and wanted to knw if it is appropriate.I also
found a solution which involves deleting a file so I knew I better ask if it
was good (2).
1-
To solve this problem:
1) open konqueror (dismiss the warnings)
2) click "Settings" then "Configure Konqueror..."
3) click on the "File Associations" button/icon
4) click the "Add..." button
5) change the Group to application, type "octet-stream" into the Type name
field
6) Press OK
7) change the icon/description to suit your taste. Don't touch the filename
patterns though.
press OK
2-
I had the same problem and was able to correct it by deleting this file. It
seemed that the contents were mangled:
~/.kde/share/mimelnk/application/octet-stream.desktop
After writing the above I thought that 'nsplugin crashed during login' might
be an appropriate search term to help find a solution to the remaining
problem. So into the search box it went and a few hits appeared:
I found that someone reported it as a bug to RedHat but it went on further to
say that "It was barfing on some not-100%-standard Mozilla plugin but that it
was fixed in 2.2-5 but that isn't right.
So can you tell me what is right?
