You probably didn't load the module for your network card, so there was
no network interface to which to assign an IP address.

Load the module, stick the name of it in /etc/modules, and re-run
etherconf. Or skip etherconf and have a whack at /etc/network/interfaces
with a text editor. (See the man page for interfaces(5) for details, if
you need them.)
